March/April 2006 — NBA Raptor JALEN ROSE remembers his first dinosaur-on-wheels.
RIDES: SO WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST WHIP?
JALEN ROSE: My first was a 1985 Dodge Omni that I got during my junior year of high school.
R: A DODGE OMNI? WEREN’T YOU SIX FEET IN HIGH SCHOOL?
JR: Yeah, and to make it worse I broke the seat so I had to lay down when I drove.
R: INTERESTING, SO WHAT WAS IT FAMOUS FOR, OTHER THAN, WELL, YOU KNOW?
JR: It was the official make-a-run car to the store, rides home, the mall, wherever. That’s the car everybody drove.
R: SO DID THE OMNI MAKE IT TO THE NBA WITH YOU?
JR: Nah, it didn’t even make it to Ann Arbor. I bought a brand new Mercedes-Benz S500 when
I got to the league in ’94.
R: SO IS THAT YOUR PRIDE AND JOY?
JR: That car just sits in my mom’s garage. My pride and joy is my silver 1959 Bentley, with
the steering wheel on the right side. It took me two years to restore it from the ground up.
