Although Twitter started as a side project in March of 2006 for the founders of podcasting network Odeo, it has grown into a social media phenomenon. The genre-defining short messaging service works over multiple platforms and devices and allows people all over the world to follow each other in real-time. This past year, Twitter() use has really taken off, especially in the sports world, where more and more athletes are using it in unique ways.
