2003: Marshall Field’s – Go READ Program

June 24, 2008

MFields0011.jpg2003 – On Tuesday, June 3rd, Jalen joined Chicago Public School CEO,
Arne Duncan, at Marshall Field’s on State Street to culminate the
store’s Go Read School Field Trip Program. Close to 300 students
listened intently as Mr. Duncan spoke about the importance of reading.
Following Mr. Duncan’s comments, Jalen took the stage to read the
children’s story, Mr. Lincoln’s Way by Patricia Polacco.

As part of Field’s Go Read, Marshall Field’s sponsored School Field
Trips, which is a pilot program that provides opportunities for third
grade students in the Chicago Public Schools (CPS) to further their
reading skills while experiencing the city’s rich cultural resources.
The School Field Trips included visits to local libraries and Marshall
Field’s Project Imagine arts partners, such as the Chicago Symphony
Orchestra and The Art Institute of Chicago.

Participating schools included: John T. Pirie, Dixon, Gillespie, Turner-Drew and William F. Ryder.
After the reading, attendees were able to view 300 unique books created
by CPS students that reflected their School Field Trip experinences and
demonstrated what they learned about the importance of reading and
Chicago’s rich cultural resources.

Jalen and Arne Duncan are both members of the Chicago Bulls All-Star Reading team.
