NBA All-Star Jalen Rose Gives Hope Through His Foundation’s Efforts… Jalen Rose overcame a humble beginning on Detroit’s west side to become a college basketball phenomenon, an all-star on the professional level, and a national television personality. Rose would be the first to tell you that none of it would have been possible without a tight family and group of mentors.
Rose says, “I’m a product of the old saying ‘It takes a village to raise a child.’ My Mom is like my rock, and my Grandma as well. I had a strong family situation even though I grew up and never met my biological dad. I can’t thank enough people who were a part of the village that helped raise me.”
Rose says his most influential mentors include former University of Detroit basketball coach Perry Watson and Detroit Mayor Dave Bing, and they instilled in him a desire to make a better life for his family.
“I was thinking ‘What’s going to make me special?’ Rose says. “I was lucky enough to have basketball as my driving force, but if that didn’t happen, I knew I had to have something to fall back on. So …

November 2009 — You don’t have to be a basketball fan to know who Jalen Rose is. Hailing from Detroit, Michigan, this first round draft pick is more than just your average athlete. Having been mentioned in Black Enterprise magazine besides Oprah and Bob Johnson for his philanthropic efforts, Rose has established himself as a man who sees the necessity in giving back.
The Jalen Rose foundation was founded by Rose to give back to the youth within his hometown of Detroit. So far his foundation has assisted 37 youth within the Detroit community as well as money to fund the Biamba Marie Mutombo hospital in The Republic of the Congo. Rose’s alma mater, The University of Michigan, has even established a full scholarship that is awarded to one student annually for the Jalen Rose foundation.
“Michigan has one of the lowest graduation rates in the nation. Our youth today need more guidance and we stress and influence education heavily,” Rose explains. It’s very rare that you see an athlete as humble and motivated to give
back to the youth. Rose was reluctant to speak out about his foundation to ensure that his fame …
