Jalen Rose has always been ahead of the curve. After a brilliant college and solid professional career, Rose has succeeded in a variety of ventures, both professional and philanthropic. Currently a successful NBA analyst for ESPN, Rose reminisced about his college and pro careers, his transition into media, and a multitude of other topics.

Rose was a basketball prodigy at SouthWestern High School in Detroit and would eventually join the most singularly important recruiting class in the history of college basketball – the “Fab Five.” Rose, Juwan Howard, Chris Webber, Jimmy King, and Ray Jackson were all major recruits to Steve Fisher’s University of Michigan program. In fact, only Jackson was not a Top 10 recruit. Prior to joining Michigan, Rose was heavily recruited by UNLV. Interestingly, he watched the famous 1991 Duke-UNLV national semifinal in the basement of UNLV star shooting guard Anderson Hunt (a high school teammate). Led by Rose and Webber, Michigan would stunningly find itself in the final the following year against that same senior-laden Blue Devil team. What: 2011 BBVA NBA All-Star Celebrity Game

Where: Jam Session, Center Court, Los Angeles Convention Center

The 2011 BBVA NBA All-Star Celebrity Game is a chance for luminaries from the entertainment world to mix with athletes past and present. The game this year in Los Angeles promises to bring out the biggest and brightest.

This year, comedian Jimmy Kimmel will serve as general manager for one team, with ESPN personality and columnist Bill Simmons heading the other. This year’s celebrity participants include a cast of players from sports, film, TV, and music:

Members of Michigan’s Fab Five honored at Crisler Arena

As far as Jimmy King can recall, it has happened only one time.

The Fab Five, the Michigan basketball sensation who spent their first two years of college in 1992 and 1993 attached at the hip reaching NCAA title games and changing parts of the basketball culture, have reunited once as a unit.

King recalled a Jalen Rose 2003 charity game in Chicago as the only time all the members of the Fab Five — King, Rose, Ray Jackson, Juwan Howard and Chris Webber — had reunited since their era ended at U-M in 1995.

When Rose, King and Jackson were honored at halftime of the Michigan/Gardner-Webb game today — brought together as part of the Legends Classic — it showed another step toward the group’s reconnection with the university. The trio were given navy blue Michigan jackets and honorary plaques.

But, as with most of the past 15 years since the Ed Martin booster scandal became public, involving Webber, there was a large piece missing.
