U-M to honor Jalen Rose, Jimmy King, Ray Jackson on Sunday

ANN ARBOR, Mich. — The University of Michigan men’s basketball program and Legends Classic will honor former Wolverine greats Ray Jackson (1992-95), Jimmy King (1992-95) and Jalen Rose (1992-94) in a halftime ceremony at U-M’s 2 p.m. game against Gardner-Webb on Sunday (Nov. 21).
As a part of the Maize and Blue’s participation in the Legends Classic, participating schools will recognize former players and coaches that have made a significant contribution to their respective program.
Jackson was a two-time All-Big Ten honoree during his four-year career at Michigan. A native of Austin, Texas, Jackson ranks in the top 30 in U-M history in both career scoring and rebounding. He scored 1,262 points during his time in Ann Arbor, 29th-most in school history, and grabbed 578 rebounds (30th all-time).
King was a three-time All-Big Ten selection and played in more games at Michigan than any other member of the legendary “Fab Five.” His 130 games played rank seventh in school history, while his 117 starts are the third-most in U-M history. The first time I voted was in 2008, at the age of 35. I will vote again this November 2nd in the
midterm elections.
Despite my career successes as a professional NBA player for 13 years, my college education and second career as a sports analyst on ESPN and ABC, no one had empowered me in our political process and I had not empowered myself.
Although I was not a registered or an active voter until 2008, I have always been civically minded, civically engaged and have cared deeply about my community and our country. This is evident in my foundation work, community initiatives and scholarship programs. It is an unfortunate and all too common misconception that young people who do not vote do not care about their well-being or that of their community. The voting gap among young people who vote and those who do not is not a function of apathy. It is a function of lack of sufficient civic education in our schools, in our media, and in our society. The civic education gap is particularly stark between those with a college education and those without.
